Coming Soon: FREE Zelda

In 2012 I made a “Zelda” quilt based off of an old Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda. My daughter Jennifer designed it and I created it for my son-in-law (her husband) for Christmas. It was a big hit not only with my son-in-law, but with my website visitors as well — many of whom were interested in a pattern or tutorial on how to make it. Now that I am living closer to my daughter, Jennifer and I have decided we can now put together a FREE quilt-along on the blog featuring Zelda.

For this new project, which we are calling Zelda: The Quilt-Along, Jennifer has changed the design slightly from the quilt I originally created, making the new Zelda quilt smaller and changing some of the blocks. I originally used a block called Ganon and due to his size, we needed to use 1/2” blocks to create him. This was not only very difficult to do, but also made this block impossible to quilt due to it’s thickness. This quilt will feature blocks including: Link, Princess Zelda, Fairy, Candlestick, Magical Sword & Shield, Blue Wizzrobe, Red Darknut, Bow and Arrow, Key and the Triforce — all graphics specifically from the first Zelda game: The Legend of Zelda.  I also wanted to make this quilt smaller and more manageable, as the original quilt ended up being: 72.5″ wide by 93″ tall. The new quilt from the Zelda: The Quilt-Along will be: 68″ wide by 82″ tall.

Zelda: The Quilt-Along will be starting March 1st, 2015 and will involve a new block each month, with a few of the first months featuring two smaller blocks twice a month. We’ll be providing not only a free design PDF each month, but will also provide helpful photos and tips that I learned along the way to really help streamline your piecing and make the entire process easier. We will finish up with our last block and finishing instructions in November, so this could be a great Christmas gift for the gamer in your life.

Zelda Quilt: Close-Up

Stay tuned as I will be releasing the new design and fabric requirements on Friday or Saturday of this week. We’ll be using Kona colors to make our quilt, but you’re welcome to use other fabric to achieve similar colors.

Please feel free to support us with a link to Zelda: The Quilt-Along by copying the following code and pasting it on your website:

Love this! My nerdie son-in-law was showing me digital graphics last week for Donkey a Kong. Can’t wait to surprise him at Christmas.

I’m looking forward to making this for my son (36 yrs old). He LOVED this game when it first came out! He’ll be so surprised when he opens his Christmas present this year. Thanks for sharing your pattern & stretching it out over the upcoming months. At times I give up on projects that seem overwhelming, but this is doable for my skill level. 🙂
